Why won't my Garmin GPS connect to the computer?

Here are some tips to try when your Garmin GPS will not connect to your computer.

First, verify the device is compatible with your computer. The installer must be run on a Windows or Mac computer or laptop. A tablet, iPad, Chromebook, Surface Pro, etc. will not be compatible.

Verify you are using a data compatible cable, not just a power cable. Typically a short data cable with GARMIN printed on the USB-A end comes in the box from Garmin.

The device needs to be in file transfer mode. When you connect the USB cable it may automatically prompt you to enter file transfer mode.

  • On automotive style units like the Drive, nuvi, and some zumo models, you will see a pop-up that says "USB Connection Detected, Entering file transfer mode". You can let this timer run out, or click continue.

    • When file transfer mode is successful on these models, you will see an image of a computer wired to a GPS
  • On newer models like DriveSmart, Tread and zumo series you may need to go into Settings, then click “Tap to connect to computer”.

If it still won’t connect, try powering the unit off, connecting to the computer with a data cable, and pressing and holding the power button for up to 30 seconds until GARMIN shows on screen.

You will know the device is in file transfer mode when you see GARMIN across the screen, with an icon showing a computer tower connected to a device. This will be orange at first, and may change to white to indicate a successful connection on some models.
