Why isn't my Garmin routing properly on the trails?
If you are unable to create a route on the trails, or the device is only creating a direct route "as the crow flies", here are some troubleshooting tips.
First, verify that your map settings are valid. You can consult our article about enabled map settings if you need further clarification on this - "Why isn't my trail map showing up on my Garmin?".
Then, check that your route calculation method is properly configured.
- For most devices, this is under Settings, then Navigation
- Look for Calculation Mode, Calculation Method, or Route Preferences
This should be set to Shortest Distance if applicable, or Faster Time if not.
This is because the distance is always exact and calculated by trail mileage, and the time is estimated based off a general speed limit per trail type. This time can vary due to rider speed and experience, trail conditions, traffic, terrain, etc.
For Montana series units, this is found under Setup, then Routing, then Activity. You want this set to Automobile Driving rather than ATV, Off-road, etc.
For Tread series units, this is configured within your Vehicle Profile. Your vehicle profile should represent a street and highway legal vehicle for routing purposes. If this is set to SXS or Snowmobile, you will encounter error messages when traveling on trails. You can either modify the existing profile to give it street and highway access, or you can create a new profile for a full-size automobile and select that one.
