How do I set up my Garmin after installing the TrailIntel map?
After installation of the TrailIntel map is complete, you will need to modify a few settings to be sure the device will display maps and create routes properly.
For Automotive Style Units (Drive, DriveSmart, Nuvi, and zumo series)
First, you must ensure the trail map is enabled and all other maps are disabled.
- Go to Settings
- Go to Map and Vehicle, or Map Display (dependent on software version)
- Go to myMaps
In this list, the only item that should be checked ON is the TrailIntel trail map. The rest of the items, including “CN North America” (the street maps) should be OFF.
- If you are using a custom or factory Topographic background map, that item can remain ON as well
Next, you must set your route calculation mode.
- Go to Settings
- Go to Navigation
- Look for Route Preferences, Calculation Method, or Calculation Mode (dependent on software version)
- Set this to shortest distance (if applicable, if not, select faster time)
- The distance will always be exact. The time is calculated based on a standard speed limit by trail type and may vary due to rider speed, trail conditions, etc.
For the Tread Series (Tread Overland, Tread SXS, Tread 2, etc.)
First, you must ensure the trail map is enabled and all other maps are disabled.
- Go to settings
- Go to Map Display
- Go to Map Manager
- Click “Manage Device Maps”
- If you don’t see a list of installed maps on this page, you may need to click the 3 lines in the top left corner, then select “Installed Maps”
In this list, the only item that should be checked ON is the TrailIntel trail map. The rest of the items should be OFF.
- If you are using a custom or factory Topographic background map, that item can remain ON as well
- Then, go back to the home screen, and click “View Map”.
- Click the Map Layers button from the right side of the screen - it looks like a stack of papers
- Under Map Type, you select your background map from 3 options - Street Map, Satellite, or Base Map. You can select whichever you’d like.
- Under Map Details, you select which data you’d like overlaid on the map. You can leave Unsaved Tracks, 3D Terrain, and Contour Lines enabled (if you’d like). The rest, including Snowmobile Trails, should be OFF.
Next, you need to set your Vehicle Profile to a highway and street legal vehicle for routing purposes.
- Go to Settings
- Click Vehicle Profile
- Create a new profile by pressing the +
- Select a Full Size Automobile
- Any height, width, or other parameters in this menu can be left at whatever defaults the system selects
- If prompted to select an adventure level, choose Level 1
For the older Montana Series (680/t, 700/i, 750i)
First, you must ensure the trail map is enabled and all other maps are disabled.
- Go to Settings
- Go to Map
- Click Map Manager, Configure Maps, or Setup Map (dependent on software version)
In this list, the only item that should be checked ON is the TrailIntel trail map. The rest of the items, including “CN North America” (the street maps) should be OFF.
- If you are using a custom or factory Topographic background map, that item can remain ON as well
Next, you need to set your Activity to Automobile Driving for routing purposes
- Go to Setup
- Go to Routing
- Go to Activity
- This must be set to Automobile Driving to accurately create routes rather than ATV, Snowmobile, or Offroad.
For the newer Montana Series (710/i, 760i)
First, you must ensure the trail map is enabled and all other maps are disabled.
- Go to Settings
- Go to Map
- Go to Map Manager
- Click Map Sets
- Create a Map Set
- Set the name to whatever you’d like, “Trail Map” for example
- Select the TrailIntel trail map from the list. That should have a green check mark, the rest should have a red “cancel” symbol.
Next, you need to set your Activity to Automobile Driving for routing purposes
- Go to Setup
- Go to Routing
- Go to Activity
- This must be set to Automobile Driving to accurately create routes rather than ATV, Snowmobile, or Offroad.
Once you have completed this configuration, your GPS will display the trails on the map around you as you travel, and the device will auto-route your directions to your destination ON the trail.
