# VAST Trails App for 2026-2027 FAQ

## Here is the information and FAQ regarding the 2026-2027 VAST Trails App, powered by TrailIntel

**I have the VAST app from last year. Will I still have access to information on the app?**

If you have the VAST Trails App from last season, please delete and remove it, as this app is no longer available on the app store and won't be receiving updates.

**Where can I get the VAST app?**

Search **VAST** in the App Store for iOS & Android

**What do the trail colors mean?**For VAST Trails

**Red:** Corridor trail

**Blue:** Club trail

Other regions - [support.trailintel.com/trail-legends](https://support.trailintel.com/trail-legends?hsLang=en)

\*Check for updates often, as they may change due to weather & conditions\*

**The app is “offline”, is this valid for the Free version?**

GPS location works across all versions because GPS relies on satellite signals, not cellular service. The free version of the app allows you to view the trails and points of interest on the map, but it does not allow access to all features without a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection. With an Enhanced subscription, you can view the trails, points of interest, trail reports, trail photos, and background map offline. Be sure to download the offline background map in your profile before you head out.

**Can I track my ride, can I share the ride with someone?**

Route Planning, Trip Recording, and Live Rider View are available on the app, but they are only available with an Enhanced subscription.

Once you’ce recorded a ride, you can find it by clicking on the magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner. This will open a menu of searchable features, starting with Waypoints. Select Tracks from the top row of items to show your recorded rides. Tap on a ride to open it on the map and view a card of information and functions, including Share.

**Do you need cell service for navigation?**

No, cell service is not required for navigation with a subscription. However, Enhanced users should have cell service or Wi-Fi to load the offline background map for the Northeast in your profile before you depart.

**When I tap Forgot password and try to reset my password, I don’t receive an email. Why is that?**

Please note that your profile in the app may be different from your Google Play Store/Apple App Store account that you used to purchase the subscription. If you signed up with a Google account, try using that method at sign-in. If you still are unable to sign in, please contact TrailIntel support for assistance.

**Email:** [support@trailintel.com](mailto:support@trailintel.com)

**Phone:** 207-614-9082

**How do I download the offline background map?**

*For Enhanced users only.*

To prepare for your trip out on the trails, download the background map before you lose a Wi-FI or cellular data connection. In the mobile app, tap the three lines in the top left corner, then click Profile. Toggle the Northeast switch on (to the right) and wait 3-5 minutes. When it is done, the switch will stay lit up blue.

**How do I track my ride?**

*For Enhanced users only.*

To track your ride/record a breadcrumb of your trip, click the blue play button on the bottom of the screen. This will begin the track recording. When you are done recording and would like to save or discard the track, click the red recoding icon on the bottom of the screen. This will open a menu where you can manage the track.

Later, you can find the saved tracks by clicking the magnifying glass in the top right corner and selecting Tracks, then filtering by selecting Mine. Community tracks will display any that other users (or you) have set to Public rather than Private.

**How do I get turn-by-turn directions on the trails?**

*For Enhanced users only.*

First, find your destination. You can do this a number of ways: tap on any spot on the map, search for a specific point you have in mind, or browse points by category. Once you find your destination, click on the point to open the card of information and view it on the map. Then, click Create Route. This will allow you to set the point as either your start or end point and build the route.

When building a route, you can add multiple destinations and change the order of your stops. Once the route is complete, you can click Start to immediately launch turn by turn guidance, or Save to add this route to your profile for later use. To find these routes, click the magnifying glass in the top right corner, select Routes, and filter by selecting Mine. Community routes will display any that other users (or you) have set to Public rather than Private.

**How do I create a custom waypoint?**

*For Enhanced users only.*

To create your own waypoint, tap the location along the trail to open the card of information about the location (you can also tap on any existing waypoint on the map to get here) and select Add Waypoint. Drag the map to the desired location, then click Continue & Save. Add a name, icon, and click Save. You can now see this point on the map or search for it by clicking the magnifying glass in the top right corner and selecting Waypoints, then filter by selecting Custom.

**How do I customize my map?**

*For Freemium and Enhanced users only.*

To customize the map in the mobile app, click the green Map Preferences icon in the bottom left corner; it looks like a stack of tiles.

- **Map type** is the background map - standard street view, satellite view, or a hybrid of both

- **Trail opacity** determines the opacity/transparency of the trails on the map. If you prefer to see more of the background through the trails, turn this down. If you want the trails a more solid color, turn this up. You can also set this to change with zoom

- **Map scale** is the zoom level you want your map to stay locked into when you set the map to auto-center on your location

- **Explore layers** allows you to turn layers with additional info on or off

- **Waypoints on the map** determines which categories of waypoints you can see icons for as you browse the map

- **Navigation info** allows you to select which pieces of information show on your screen as you are navigating to a destination

- **Tracks opacity** determines the opacity/transparency of your breadcrumb track

**What is the cost of the app?**

- **Waypoints:** share, favorite, view complete business details, and add as a custom waypoint.

- Weather, elevation, and speed data.

**Enhanced - $49.99/year :**

- All Freemium benefits.
- **Waypoints:** Enhanced users can access all waypoint categories
- **Search:** Subscribed riders have expanded search across waypoints, tracks, routes, and trails
- Garmin integration.

- **Waypoints:** create routes to any point of interest on the map.

- **Route planning and turn-by-turn navigation**.

- **Offline access:** Download maps and trail data for use without cellular service. *GPS positioning works across all versions using satellite signals*.
- Create custom waypoints.

**If I have a subscription and download the app on multiple devices, would I have to pay separately for each device?**

No. The subscription is tied to your sign-in and is valid for any device you personally own.

**Important points of interest/services (gas, food, accommodation, etc.) are missing from the map and/or contain incomplete information. Who can I tell?** The points of interest displayed on the VAST trails are managed by VAST. If you notice a business or service is missing or incorrect, please contact VAST at [advertising@vtvast.org](mailto:advertising@vtvast.org)

**I’m seeing a lot of closed trails (gray) on the map, is this correct?**

The app and interactive web map show the most up-to-date trail conditions. If you have questions about a specific area or trail, please contact VAST or the club.

**How can I see the map in the direction I am heading and have my position stay in the center, like on a GPS device?**

Click the black icon with the white navigation arrow in the bottom right corner to toggle from North up to track up - like on a GPS. The icon will change to a white radio signal. Tap that again to go back to North up.

**How do I view services and points of interest?**

Click on the magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner. This will open a menu of searchable features, starting with Waypoints. You can scroll or select one or more categories you’re looking to search for from the row of icons (Ex. Restaurants). This will display all applicable points, sorted by distance - nearest first. You can also simply browse and pan across the map to view the icons on the map.

Free users will be able to see these points on the map, but cannot create turn-by-turn routes on the trails without an Enhanced subscription.

**When I use the Route Planning feature, it avoids trails that are closed (gray trail) but not trails with a closure report (green gate icon on an open trail).**

The routing algorithm avoids closed trails, but only when they are closed in the database. When a user submits a closure report, the green gate icon appears on the map immediately for other users to reference, but these reports are individually reviewed for validity by the mapping team before officially closing the trail on the map.
If you come across a trail that is marked open but is closed, use the Trail Report function by clicking the exclamation point in the bottom right corner to add a report and the team will resolve it.

**I paid for an Enhanced subscription, but the app prompts me to purchase one again or start a free trial. What should I do?**

Please contact TrailIntel support for assistance. This may happen if you have multiple accounts and/or signed up through the Google or Apple App Store.

**Email:** [support@trailintel.com](mailto:support@trailintel.com)

**Phone:** 207-614-9082

**I purchased an Enhanced subscription on one of my devices. How do I activate it on my other devices?**

All you need to do is sign into your TrailIntel account. Your sign in works for the web app on your computer and mobile app on your phone.

**I switched from an iPhone to an Android phone (or vice versa). How can I change my Enhanced subscription from my old to my new phone?**

If you paid for an Enhanced subscription with a credit card, you simply sign into your TrailIntel account on the new phone.

However if you signed up with Google Play or Apple, this subscription is tied to the platform on which they were made. If you no longer wish to pay for the subscription via the “old” app store that you are switching from, you should cancel your subscription with your former platform. Here is how, depending on the platform:

- For **Android devices,** you can follow [this guide from Google](https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/7018481?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&hl=en).
- For **iOS devices**, you can follow [this guide from Apple](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202039).

**How do I cancel my subscription?**

If you signed up in the app store:

- For **Android** devices, you can follow [this guide from Google](https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/7018481?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&hl=en).
- For **iOS** devices, you can follow [this guide from Apple](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202039).

If you signed up with a credit card on the web, you can manage your subscription [here](https://app.trailintel.com/profile/subscriptions). Contact TrailIntel support if you need further assistance.

**Where can I find explanations on how to use the app?**

There is a Support section in the app, which you can access by following these steps:

1. Tap the hamburger menu icon in the top left corner.
2. Tap \[Support\].

This will open a chat with the TrailIntel virtual agent. The agent will answer questions, direct you to online resources, or connect you with the TrailIntel support team as needed.

You can also go to [support.trailintel.com](https://support.trailintel.com?hsLang=en) to browse all resources.

**Updates are too frequent and/or slow! Can I avoid them?**

We release trail map updates very frequently throughout the season, often once a day during the peak. With the TrailIntel mobile app, your map updates are automatically streamed when you have a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection.

We publish an app update every few weeks to push out new features to enhance your app experience. We recommend staying up to date. The app will notify you when a new version is available to download, or you can set it to auto-update in your app store.

**How can I activate the GPS function on my device to find my position on the map?**

**iOS devices:**

Open \[settings\], scroll down and tap \[privacy\].

At the top, tap \[location services\].

make sure \[location services\] at the top is enabled.

Scroll down until you find TrailIntel and tap on it.

Make sure this is set to “Always”.

**Android devices:**

Open \[settings\], scroll down and tap \[location\].

Make sure the switch at the top is on.

Tap \[app permissions\].

Scroll down until you find TrailIntel and tap on it.

Make sure this is set to “Allow all the time”.

**Why are distances shown in miles if I'm in Canada?**

By default, the app uses miles/imperial units.

**My GPS location is incorrect on the map and/or not precise enough. Why?**

For optimal performance, the app should be used outdoors with a direct line of sight to the sky OR with a Wi-Fi/cellular data connection. It will not work well inside a building without a signal, but will outside.

In addition, you could enable \[Precise Location\] on your device. Here is how:

**iOS devices:**

1. Open \[Settings\], scroll down and tap \[Privacy\].
2. At the top, tap \[Location Services\].
3. Make sure \[Location Services\] at the top is enabled.
4. Scroll down until you find your organization’s app and tap on it.
5. Make sure one of the last three choices is enabled, anything but \[Never\].
6. Make sure \[Precise Location\] is enabled.

**Android devices:**

1. Open \[Settings\], scroll down and tap \[Location\].
2. Make sure the switch at the top is on.
3. Tap \[App permissions\].
4. Scroll down until you find your organization’s app and tap on it.
5. Make sure one of the first three choices is enabled, anything but \[Don’t allow\].
6. Make sure \[Use precise location\] is enabled.

**How do I save a trail or waypoint as a favorite?**

*For Enhanced users only.*

Tap the trail or waypoint on the map to open the card of information. Then, click Favorite in the bottom right corner. To find your favorites later, click the magnifying glass in the top right corner, select the category, then filter by selecting Favorites

**What do the icons on the map mean?**

These icons represent the points of interest associated with the map data as well as the custom waypoints you create and save to your account
